The name of the Ulysses Hotel was inspired by one of the greatest English-language novels of the 20th century, Ulysses, by the Irish writer James Joyce.

The story follows a day (16th June 1904) in the life of an ordinary working-class man, Advertisement Salesman Leopold Bloom, and his journey around the city of Dublin. Starting at 8am, the story records his thoughts, experiences and the things and people that he  encounters throughout the day until 2am the next morning.

Much like a traveller, Leopold Bloom’s mind wonders around the city. Thus the name of the Ulysses Hotel was born.

We found a local artist whose work has been shown in different partsof the world, an Artist/Illustrator/Visual Designer who has lived for a long time in England and studied at the prestigious Central St. Martins University: Ning-I Yen . Ningi-I is a designer who has a good understanding of the culture of this region and her own personal artistic view to transform this story into a creative visual image exclusively for the Ulysses Hotel.

Just like the novel, the image reads from left all the way to the right side of wall, describing Leopold Bloom’s journey during the day:

From the left side of the wall;

The morning Leopold leaves his house, riding in a car to a cemetery, encountering death and religion.

Leopold’s friend, talking with the principal of the school he teaches at, about religion and political views.

Leopold’s wife, excitedly awaits  the appointment she has with her agent, with whom she has been having an affair. A small male figure is set below by an arm chair, the suggestion being that this figure is Leopold, who looking at them, as in the novel, Leopold knows about the affair.

Leopold sees a woman by the beach, about whom he fantasizes from a distance. The same male figure is used with a large naked woman and a seagull to describe this chapter.

The right side of wall  was designed to illustrate Leopold‘s evening:

He visited different parts of the city, going into a hospital, a pub, a train station, a book-stand, a court house and a friend’s house…

As Leopold travels into the dark alleys of red-light district he has many obscure thoughts in his head.

Finally, the novel ends wtih a chapter devoted to the thoughts of Leopold’s wife, as she is thinking about many different things before she falls asleep.
